Important note: my blog is moving to MediaFuturist.com - Update your Feeds!

I have finally relented to people's requests for finding an easier URL for my blog - after all, GerdLeonhard.net is kinda hard to remember unless you are German I guess, so I have now moved all of my 1050+ blog posts etc to my new address, MediaFuturist.com, and I will be blogging at that URL from now on. Please make a note of it.

Important: if you are reading my blog using an RSS reader please be sure to add my new feed URL to your reader - otherwise you will be left out of the loop, going forward (bummer;) The new feed reader link is here

Please let me know if this is giving you any trouble.
Thanks - Gerd Leonhard

Big news:: (BBC): US Yahoo offers copy-free music

Link: BBC NEWS | Technology | US Yahoo offers copy-free music.

On the official Yahoo music blog, director of product management Ian Rogers wrote: "As you know, we've been publicly trying to convince record labels that they should be selling MP3s for a while now.

"Our position is simple: DRM doesn't add any value for the artist, label (who are selling DRM-free music every day - the Compact Disc), or consumer, the only people it adds value to are the technology companies who are interested in locking consumers to a particular technology platform."

Dave Goldberg, the vice president and general manager of Yahoo Music urged record labels reconsider their stance on DRM technology earlier this year.

Well done Dave!
Like I said a few months ago: major record labels will start selling MP3s, finally taking the revenues that are put on the table rather than dreaming about the pyrrhic victory of copy protection.

Update: I just published a short podcast on this...

My new company, Sonific: funding announced, CDBaby joins, BETA launch soon

Read these press clippings and visit us

Picture_7_1 From: Digital Music News
"Emerging Startup Spreads Music Soundtracks Across Internet
Browse a few MySpace pages, and chances are some music will begin playing spontaneously. A soundtrack not only accentuates the overall presentation, it speaks volumes upon the personality of the MySpace user. Now, one startup is hoping to offer that same audio personality to a number of different
internet destinations, including blogs, photo- and video-sharing sites, and social networking pages. The company, called Sonific, will offer volumes of free music that can be posted "as quickly and easily as adding an image".

Sonific is the brainchild of music futurist Gerd Leonhard, who among other things is the author of The Future of Music. The company has just rustled funding from a number of angels, and will soon position an invitation-only beta. Sonific has also brokered a deal with CDBaby, which will allow members
to easily spread their music across the web. The weapon of choice will be the SongSpots player, which simply drops tunes into sites. "Many CDBaby artists are excited about the SongSpots player, bringing their music into all the previously-silent corners of the web," commented Derek Sivers, founder and CEO of CDBaby. Sonific will represent thousands of artists, all of whom are interested in promoting their music more deeply into the internet..."

Apple watch out: Real Networks deal with MSFT !

Good WIRED feature on this --- and definitely right on the money.
"...broad settlement between digital media pioneer RealNetworks and its longtime foe Microsoft goes a lot further than simply ending the last major U.S. antitrust case against the tech heavyweight. The deal also aims to help the two companies better compete against Apple Computer in the increasingly important business of online audio and video. ..."

"An Apple spokesman refused to comment...."

Indeed it does.  Now REAL finally gets that much needed cash to pull out the heavy marketing artillery against Apple's  per-per-track 'trojan horse' model.... Tough luck for Napster, though?
