Skype versus Google Talk

ClientGoogle just upped the ante for Skype and launched the Google TALK application. I just downloaded it, feel free to test-call me at gleonhard@gmail.com. Maybe this will be less a burden on the CPU since it's not P2P.... even said that, Skype Rocks, no doubt!!! I am a heavy user, skype-in and out ;), and can testofy to that.  The IHT has a good feature on Skype versus Google.

SipPhone - not for me

Ok, so I am very interested in VoIP because I need to make a lot of calls from all over the world, while traveling. I am using Skype, and it ROCKS, but I do need a landline number for people to call, ideally a US, UK and HongKong or Singapore number (yes, I am picky, but if I have to compromise I will take the US number, but... it must be 415 ....:). I tried Callserve and it was ok but extremely unreliable. I could not sign up to Vonage without a US credit card - bummer; you guys need to get with the program. I got involved with SipPhone and thought they could solve this problem but alas I was wrong. I paid my $50 + and got my US virtual number (albeit after lengthy debates with customer service). So far so good. Outgoing calls were OK but not nearly as good as Skype-Out - lots of dropped calls and low-quality sound, and various firewall problems.  But INCOMING calls - no luck, period - you could not reach me on that number if you paid 500 bucks - it would either ring busy, or not connect at all, or ask people to leave a message using a template announcement so you had no clue if it was my phone or Bill Clinton's.. I DID get those message via email which is cool, but I need to get those calls to ring on my PC wherever I am, not get lost in the shuffle. So, I am gone - uninstalled, and wrote off my $50. Anybody have any other VoIP services I can waste money on ;)?

Skype

I have been using Skype for over 6 months now, and I think it's great. The voice quality is sometimes amazing, sometimes less so, but overall, it rocks! One thing about the p2p client is that it does suck the power off your PC, so sometimes I need to close it when running lots of other stuff. Give it a try and call me at Skype ID: gleonhard. Update: Skype just raised $18.8 Million in new funding - this thing is here to stay. Telcos take note...
